Training Profile -Thomas Foods International Fresh Produce

Regular training is important to Thomas Foods International Fresh Produce to ensure its 130 employees are up-to-date with legislation changes and regulations, and provided with professional-development opportunities.

Established in 1988, Thomas Foods International has grown to become one of Australia’s largest food-processing companies, now exporting to more than 80 countries. TFI entered the fresh produce sector specialising in the growing, packing and distribution of potatoes – with operations in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.

Training and development provide benefits for both the employer and employees says Paula McPhee, TFIFP Human Resources Manager, who turns to Business SA for training needs.

“Training leads to better morale in the workplace and decreases employee turnover as they feel valued by the business investing in their development,” Paula says.

TFIFP’s managers and supervisors recently participated in Business SA’s Drugs and Alcohol in the Workplace training to give them the skills to recognise the signs and symptoms of drug and alcohol misuse in the workplace, and how to implement the necessary risk-management interventions.

“It’s important to understand the changing workplace and how we can best support our employees to ensure a safe work environment.”

TFIFP has since implemented random testing in accordance with its drug and alcohol policy, which has decreased its risk profile and alerted employees that there is a zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol in the workplace and the associated disciplinary consequences.
