10 tips for a safer workplace

October is National Safe Work Month.

National Safe Work Month is a SafeWork SA initiative that puts the spotlight on safety. It promotes working together, working smarter, working happier and, most importantly, working safer.

Our top 10 tips for a safe and healthy workplace:

1.   Ensure everyone knows and understands potential hazards in the workplace and works to reduce risks;
2.   Highlight and promote commitment to the principles of a positive safety culture;
3.   Make safety performance is part of all managers’ and workers’ job descriptions;
4.   Promptly respond to health and safety issues;
5.   Encourage and support workers to report health and safety concerns;
6.   Methodically investigate all incidents and near misses, identify root causes, and respond by reducing risks to safety;
7.   Communicate regularly with supervisors and workers about safety;
8.   Ensure that health and safety is of primary importance when inducting new workers into the workplace;
9.   Promote and attend safety training sessions; and
10. Support workers with mental health conditions and prevent discrimination against them in the workplace.
