Penalty Rates

Viable wages rates are critical for businesses to survive and grow.  Business SA supported of the reduction of penalty rates on Sundays and public holidays and welcomed the Fair Work Commissions decision to modern rates of pay on these days.  For too long South Australia’s small businesses have been crippled by penalty rates.  The adjusted rates will provide South Australia’s 56,600 unemployed and 90,800 under employed workers greater opportunity.

The Fair Work Commission concluded that the deterrent effect of high Sunday penalty rates did not meet the objectives of the Fair Work Act to provide a balanced framework for national economic prosperity and social inclusion for all Australians. The Fair Work Commission decreased penalty rates in the retail, hospitality, pharmacy, and Restaurant and Catering industries.
