Young Entrepreneurs Ready to Fly

24 November 2016

Three participants of the SA Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (SAYES) will showcase their businesses at Bowerbird Design Market, at the Adelaide Showground from 25‑27 November.

Applications for the next round of the SAYES program are now open.

Bowerbird Design Market brings together a hand-picked selection of 150 of the best independent Australian designers for three days of ideas and inspiration at Adelaide Showground from 25‑27 November 2016.

Three such designers are participants in Business SA’s South Australian Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (SAYES) – Emma Kate Codrington of Emma Kate Co, Kristal Spencer of Winestains and Mim Gollan of Four Seeds.

“Bowerbird is a great showcase of local and interstate designers and I love being immersed in a pool of such talent. It is a great opportunity for me to reach my target audience and build awareness of my brand and my product,” founder of Four Seeds, Mim Gollan said.

“This coming event will be our 7th Bowerbird market, and many marketgoers will now make a point of buying their favourite chocolate brownie as part of their visit to the event.”

Kristal Spencer is the Creative Director of Winestains. Drawing inspiration from a deep love of great wine and a passion for brilliant design, Winestains specialises in unique, handcrafted homewares forged from aged wine barrels.

“Bowerbird is a great place to gain exposure for our business. We get to meet and connect with our customers face to face and see who is buying our designs. It also gives us the opportunity to grow as a business,” Ms Spencer said.

Ms Spencer, who is in the early stages of SAYES, encouraged other young business owners to consider enrolling in this innovative program run by Business SA.

“If you want to start your business on the right foot, SAYES is the program that will help you to do this.”
Ms Gollan endorsed this sentiment, and appreciated the opportunity SAYES afforded her to work on – rather than in – her business.

“The SAYES workshops force me to make time to sit still and think about different elements of running my business, or learn about things I didn’t know that I didn’t know. My days are normally spent doing what needs to be done today (or yesterday) so I’m really enjoying having these moments to think about and plan for the future of my business.”

More than 500 young entrepreneurs have graduated from SAYES in the past 18 years with a survey of 40 graduates in 2015 revealing they had created 531 new jobs and recorded 2014-15 turnover of nearly $65 million.

For young entrepreneurs with designs on running their own business, applications are now open for the next round of the SAYES program.
