Did you know there are approximately 1000 refugees living in South Australia? Many have fled war-torn countries like Syria, Iraq and Iran seeking protection from conflict and trauma – something most of us growing up in Australia have been fortunate to have never experienced. Thankfully, a little-known organisation called
STTARS has been assisting refugees since 1991, maintaining best practice with Business SA training.
STTARS, a non-government organisation located in Adelaide, Salisbury, Mount Gambier, Naracoorte and Bordertown, assist people from a refugee and migrant background who have experienced torture, or have been traumatised because of persecution, violence, war or unlawful imprisonment prior to their arrival in Australia.
Services include counselling, education and training, a mental health clinic and a child and youth program.
Robyn Smyth is STTARS’ director and leads a team of 45 dedicated staff members. She says training is an investment in their staff, so they can provide the best possible service for their clients.
With several new team leaders and managers, Robyn recently invested in Business SA’s WHS for Managers and Supervisors training course.
“Having a facilitator come in and tailor training to our needs meant staff remained engaged and we could ask questions throughout the training specific to our organisation,” Robyn said.
“We have since reviewed all of our policies and procedures and put them into place.”
