How to Attract and Retain the best staff in Today's Competitive Workforce

Employee turnover is expensive, no matter what type of position an employee holds. As a business owner or leader, it’s important you understand the true value of hiring and retaining talent in today’s competitive workforce.

Renae Sullivan, Senior Consultant at Business SA member Entrée Recruitment, shares her top six tips on how to attract and retain the best staff.

Tip 1: Culture

Culture fit is so important for recruiting and retaining great talent. Hiring employees that don't mesh well with the existing or desired culture can lead to poor work quality, decreased job satisfaction and a toxic environment.

Tip 2. Work-Life Balance

There is often a concern that when employees leave early for the day or aren’t in the office from 9am to 5pm, that work is not being completed or it is not the same quality. However, studies show that flexible hours and working remotely actually improves employee output.

Tip 3. Training and Development

By connecting employees with training and development opportunities your business will also reap the benefits as your employees continue to grow and become more knowledgeable. Business SA offers a range of training and development courses to upskill your staff, from Human Resources and Workplace Relations to Work Health Safety and Leadership. Learn more here

Tip 4. Recognise and Reward

Employees want to know they are appreciated and that if they put in the effort to produce great work, they will be rewarded.

Tip 5. Streamline

People respond positively to an organisation when you streamline the process and get back to people quickly, even if they did not get the position. Leave them with a great impression regardless.

Tip 6. On-boarding

The first 90 days can be critical for helping people feel part of a team and when they do, they are both more engaged and committed to the business and its goals.
